The beauty of Forest County during the winter months is a lure to cross country skiers of all skill levels and ages.Cornplanter State Forest, located 3 miles northwest of Tionesta on Hunter Run Road (off Rt. 36), is home to Forest County's most popular cross country ski trails. There are two well marked trails here that provide a short 2.7 mile excursion or a longer one of 4.2 miles. Both wind through a peaceful, pristine forest named after Chief Cornplanter, a leader of the Seneca nation during the late 1700's. Brochures with maps and trail information can be picked up at the trail head. Cook Forest State Park is another choice location for winter enthusiasts. There are three designated ski trails, ranging from 1.5 to 3 miles and traversing some of the most beautiful scenery in the county. You'll experience the wonders of Pennsylvania's virgin White Pine and Hemlock forest, a National Natural Landmark. A great outdoor experience any time of the year, these woods are especially peaceful during the winter. Buzzard Swamp Wildlife Viewing and Hiking Area also has trails open during the winter for cross country skiers.
